Why a Certificate of Analysis Alone Isn't Enough
COA forgery is a documented problem in the research peptide supply chain. Understanding the limits of supplier-provided documentation is a precondition for honest sourcing.
A Certificate of Analysis is a document produced by the manufacturer of a research compound, reporting the results of analytical testing performed on a specific lot. Properly executed, a COA reports HPLC purity, mass spectrometric identity confirmation, net peptide content, and related quality metrics tied to a unique batch identifier.
In practice, the integrity of a COA depends on a chain of trust that is difficult to verify from the outside. Several documented patterns recur in the research peptide supply chain.
Documented failure modes

- Identical COA imagery reused across multiple lots, with only the batch number altered between copies.
- COAs presented as third-party analytical reports that are in fact produced in-house by the manufacturer.
- COAs that report purity to one decimal place without the underlying chromatogram or mass spectrum that would support the value.
- COAs whose stated method does not match the type of analysis represented (for example, an HPLC purity figure reported on a method specification that does not describe a peptide-appropriate column or detection wavelength).
What honest documentation looks like
Honest documentation acknowledges what the document can and cannot establish. A manufacturer COA paired with the corresponding raw analytical traces — chromatogram, mass spectrum, integration table — is a stronger record than a single summary page. Independent verification on a randomly selected sample is stronger still, and is the standard toward which serious suppliers are expected to work.

A COA is a claim. Independent verification is a result.
The CRL position on COA documentation is published separately and is updated as the chain-of-custody and independent-testing protocols come online. The Journal will publish independent results, including those that fail, as they are received.
